So, my dad had this thing. His life motto was basically, "Say yes to everything and worry about the details later."
Pure enthusiasm. Pure chaos. Bless him.
As a kid it was kinda cool. Imagine living like that. Just leaping off cliffs with no parachute and hoping the universe knits one mid-air.
Except he didn't just say yes for himself. He said yes for me too.
Picture this. I'm working in Hong Kong. Dad's there too. He tells a factory owner, "Hayley can design some 3D models for you!"
Me. He said me.
I didn't even know how to draw. I'd been told as a kid that I couldn't draw, so I'd given it up entirely.
So there I am, 20-something, smiling politely, dying inside, thinking, "Oh cool, now I have to magically become a 3D designer by Thursday."
I sat on that job for months. Drowning in guilt and dread and this weird pressure to live up to his "just say yes" vibe.
That's what you do when you're raised by a man who believes you can do everything, even when you absolutely cannot.
You say yes to things that feel awful. Yes to things you don't want. Yes because someone else is excited and you're just dragged along for the ride.
People-pleaser activated. Saying yes like it was my job.
These days I don't say yes unless it feels like me. My energy. My desire. My excitement.
There's a real difference between a yes that feels like lightness in the chest, and a yes that feels like someone dropped a brick in your stomach.
I say yes when my whole body goes, "Oooh, that sounds fun." Not when it goes, "Ugh, I guess so."
Sometimes an opportunity comes in hot and fast. No fuss. No overthinking. No dread about how you'll pull it off. Everything lines up like you'd pre-ordered it from the universe.
That's what a true yes feels like. You barely have to push, because the energy is carrying you.
Not everything drops out of the sky at once. Some yeses take time. They need organising. They're a bit scary. You feel the wobble.
But deep down there's that little spark of, "This is right for me." Those yeses are gold too. They grow you.
And you're allowed to change your yeses as you grow. Thank goodness!
These days I'm teaching my kids something totally different. Not "say yes to everything and drown later". Say yes to the things that feel like joy and alignment and who you actually are.
If saying no still feels impossible, read how to stop people-pleasing and set boundaries without the guilt.
Healing is messy and layered, more cha-cha than straight line. A map of the nine stages, so you know where you are is okay.
... it is my energetic healing work where I see the biggest shifts in people ...
Picture the first tree that comes to mind. Tall or small, alone or in a forest, bare or in leaf? What it shows about how you see yourself.
