Does your passion have to be your job?

From The Guide Newsletter

There's a story we've all been sold. Find your passion. Turn it into your career. Live your purpose 24/7. If your work isn't your passion, you're doing life wrong.

For some souls, that path is exactly right. For many others, it's caused nothing but stress, guilt, and the quiet feeling that they're failing at life because they haven't turned their creative hobby into a six-figure business.

I want to offer a different lens. A more soul-honouring one.

Work and joy are two different things

In astrology, your career and your creative joy sit in two different houses. The 10th house is your public role, your visible work in the world. The 5th house is your creativity, your pleasure, what you do for the love of it.

They can be the same thing. They can also be completely different. Your work might be teaching, engineering, accounting or nursing. Your joy might be painting, dancing, gardening or writing. Both can be honoured. Neither has to become the other.

The pressure to merge them is a modern invention, not a spiritual truth. Your soul didn't necessarily come here to monetise its joy. It came here to LIVE its joy, in whatever container makes that possible.

Two ways to honour your soul's work

Work and passion are the same thing. Some souls have built lives where what they love and what they do for income are woven together. My work falls into this category. It works because I've also built healthy outlets for the parts of me that aren't my job. I still protect the space where I create just for me, with no commercial pressure.

Work funds the passion. Other souls have a job that pays the bills, and they use that stability to pour their real energy into what they love. The job isn't their identity. It's the container that makes the rest of their life possible. This isn't settling. It's a deliberate choice to keep certain things pure.

Both are valid. Both are honourable. Both can lead to a meaningful life.

When the wrong model kills the magic

For souls meant to have their work be their passion, being stuck in a job that has nothing to do with what they love can feel soul-crushing over time.

For souls meant to have their work fund their passion, monetising the hobby can be exactly what kills the joy in it. The thing they used to love becomes a client obligation, a deadline, a marketing task.

If you've ever turned a hobby into a business and watched the joy drain out of it, you're not broken. Painting stops being fun when you have to paint for other people. Writing stops flowing when it becomes content.

Sometimes your soul is protecting your passion by refusing to let it become your pay cheque. That's not laziness. That's wisdom.

Giving yourself permission

You are allowed to have a job that pays the bills while you do your creative work purely for love. This is not a lesser path.

You're also allowed to build your whole life around your passion, as long as you keep healthy outlets outside of it.

Your purpose is bigger than your job title.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Do I feel more alive when my passion has commercial pressure on it, or does that pressure kill the joy?
  • Does having a day job free me up creatively, or drain the energy I'd pour into what I love?
  • When I imagine earning from my favourite creative pursuit, does it feel expansive, or like something precious is about to be lost?

Your answers will tell you which model fits you. And whichever it is, please stop apologising for it.
