Why am I attracted to emotionally unavailable people?

From The Guide Newsletter

One of the things I see so often in client sessions is this heartbreaking confusion.

"Why do I keep attracting emotionally unavailable people?"

"Why do I end up with partners who can't meet me?"

"Why do I fall for someone I know isn't good for me?"

Beneath those questions is usually something much deeper. A core pattern that was seeded long ago, often in childhood, and shaped what we unconsciously believe is normal, safe, or even loving.

It's about what you learned

If you grew up with a parent who was emotionally distant, unpredictable or dismissive, that may have become your inner template for what love looks like.

Not because it felt good. Because it felt familiar.

The nervous system will always reach for familiarity over fulfilment, until the pattern is rewired.

So you might consciously long for someone emotionally available and still find yourself drawn to people who are hot-and-cold, who make you question yourself, who ghost or gaslight or won't commit. And then you wonder what's wrong with you.

There's nothing wrong with you. There's something wounded in your patterning, and that can absolutely be healed.

The four energies we meet in relationships

Let's zoom out for a moment. In relationships we often dance with four core energies: the Divine Masculine and Feminine (the empowered expressions) and the Toxic Masculine and Feminine (the wounded distortions). Anyone can carry any of them.

Divine Masculine

Presence. Protection. Honesty. Grounded leadership. Healthy boundaries. Accountability. Devotion without control.

Being with this energy feels like standing next to a mountain. You're seen. Safe. Supported. Clear.

Toxic Masculine

Control. Dismissiveness. Rigidity. Gaslighting. Avoidance. Power games. Emotional unavailability.

This is the one who leaves you walking on eggshells. You're never quite sure if you're crazy or if they're just emotionally missing.

Divine Feminine

Receptivity. Intuition. Emotional depth. Flow. Creative power. Deep listening. Embodied softness.

She feels like velvet under the stars. There's room for your whole self to exist and be met.

Toxic Feminine

Victimhood. Guilt-tripping. Passive aggression. People-pleasing. Emotional chaos. Manipulation.

She's giving everything, until she's not. There's confusion, over-attachment and a loss of centre.

Why we attract the wounded versions

It's not because we want them.

It's because a part of us, often a very young part, has been trained to read toxicity as love.

If your first experience of love came with control, silence, dismissal, chaos or fear, your nervous system may think that's how love feels. Even if you hate it now. Even if it hurts.

That's why a healthy partner can feel boring, too much, or not "sparkly" enough. It's not the person. It's your nervous system not recognising safety as home. Yet!

Rerouting the pattern

Here's the good news: none of this is fixed.

You can teach your nervous system to want emotional safety instead of chaos. You can come to feel drawn to consistency, not unpredictability. You can start honouring the Divine Masculine and Feminine in yourself, so you stop seeking completion in wounded mirrors.

Try this reflection

  • What traits do I crave in a partner?
  • What traits do I consistently attract?
  • Do those match, or is there a gap?
  • Who first taught me love, and what did it feel like?
  • Can I recognise the Divine traits in myself, before I look for them in others?

You don't need to shame the pattern. Just start noticing it. Noticing is powerful.

You are worthy of relationships where you feel held, not handled. Where your softness is safe. Where your bigness is welcome.

This is exactly the kind of pattern I love clearing with clients. Read about narcissistic and toxic relationship pattern clearing.
