Sacred rage: is it OK for spiritual people to get angry?

From The Guide Newsletter

Something interesting happens in spiritual communities. We talk about love, peace, compassion and surrender. What we don't talk about is anger. Rage. Fury. The hot, red, alive energy that arrives when something is genuinely wrong and needs to change.

Because "spiritual" people aren't supposed to get angry. Right?

Wrong. And this belief has caused so much damage.

What I see in the shoulders

Rage doesn't disappear when you refuse to feel it. It just goes somewhere else.

I see stored anger in people's shoulders quite often! Tight, heavy, held. Years of "I shouldn't be angry" and "I should be more forgiving" and "I should be above this" sitting in the body like a weight.

Anger isn't a spiritual failing. It's information. It's your soul telling you something is wrong. Someone crossed a line. A boundary needs to be set. A situation needs to change. The anger is showing up to help you.

When you refuse to feel it, you don't become more spiritual. You just become someone with unprocessed rage stored in your body.

The passive-aggressive kettle

Here's a pattern I see often in quiet, sensitive people. They don't feel their anger in the moment. They tell themselves it's not that big a deal. They practise gratitude. They forgive quickly. They keep the peace.

This is spiritual bypassing. Using spiritual language or practices to avoid feeling something uncomfortable. Rage is one of the emotions we bypass the most, because it doesn't fit the image of who we're supposed to be.

But bypassed emotions don't disappear. They wait. And one day the kettle can't hold the steam any more, and it comes out sideways.

Passive-aggressive comments. Sudden coldness. Silent treatment. A withdrawal that seems out of proportion to whatever just happened. Underneath it all is years of anger that was never allowed to speak in real time.

When it finally arrives, it arrives loud, messy, and often aimed at the wrong person.

Learning to release it sooner

The healing work isn't about becoming an angrier person. It's about learning to feel and release anger BEFORE it builds into a pressure system with nowhere to go.

Anger felt in real time is quick. You notice something isn't right. You say the thing. You set the boundary. You feel the fire. Then it moves through you and passes.

Anger held for years is different. It's dense, tangled up with all the other times you didn't speak up, and layered with shame about being angry in the first place. It usually needs conscious energy work, movement, sometimes tears, sometimes actually saying the thing that's been left unsaid for a decade.

A simple way to release anger

Here's a practice I teach my clients.

Put a dot on a piece of paper. Just a dot. Then get really angry at that dot. Send all the energy, all the fury, all the frustration into it. Be as angry as you actually are, without editing, without being polite. When you're done, screw the paper up and throw it away.

That's it. Simple, portable and shockingly effective.

You can do it while you're cooking dinner, or on hold with the bank. The paper won't judge you. The dot can take it. And your body gets to release the energy without harming anyone, including you.

What sacred rage actually is

Sacred rage isn't the same as reactive anger. It's not lashing out. It's not cruelty. It's not the fire that burns everything down for the sake of drama.

Sacred rage is the fierce, clear, unmistakable NO that comes up when something is genuinely wrong. It's the mother lion energy that protects what matters. It's the voice that says "this stops now" when a boundary has been crossed too many times.

When you honour it, sacred rage moves you. It gets you out of situations that were slowly crushing you. It ends the relationships that needed to end. It restores your dignity in places you'd forgotten you had any.

When you suppress it, that same energy either turns inward (exhaustion, resentment, a flatness you can't explain) or leaks out sideways.

Permission

If you've been taught that spiritual people don't get angry, please hear me. You're allowed to feel rage. You're allowed to be furious about the things that deserve fury. You're allowed to have a fierce NO in your body.

Your job isn't to be constantly serene. Your job is to be honest. And sometimes honesty is fire.

Your rage isn't the opposite of your spirituality. In its healthy form, it's part of it.
