I had an experience recently that reminded me how important it is to trust what your body is telling you, even when your mind is trying to be polite.
I was with friends, and someone new joined our group. She was lovely, really. Warm, chatty, friendly. While most of us went off to explore the shops, she stayed back with one of my friends to catch up properly.
When we met up afterwards, my friend was completely drained. Not tired in the usual way. Energetically flattened. She described it as feeling like her energy had left her body, overwhelmed by something dark and heavy that wasn't hers.
The woman hadn't been unkind. She'd just talked. And talked. And talked. She'd unloaded her worries, her frustrations and her entire inner world without pausing to notice whether my friend had the space to hold it. It wasn't a conversation. It was an energy transfer.
This is what people mean when they talk about energy vampires. Most of the time it isn't malicious. Some people genuinely don't realise they're doing it. But when the exchange is entirely one-way, with no pause and no checking in, the person on the receiving end can feel like they've been emptied out.
And if you're a sensitive soul, your body will know before your mind catches up.
If you've spent time with someone who seemed perfectly nice and afterwards felt oddly drained, anxious or overwhelmed, your body was giving you information.
Your body knows when energy is being pulled from you faster than you can replenish it. You don't have to override that knowing just to be kind.
Most people who drain others aren't doing it consciously. They're overwhelmed, struggling, looking for relief. They've found someone who listens well and holds space beautifully. So they keep going, not noticing that the other person has gone quiet or reached capacity.
But there are also people who do know. They've learned that certain people make them feel better, lighter, more grounded. And they return again and again, not to connect, but to offload.
Either way, the person being leaned on ends up depleted.
If that's you, it's worth asking: am I allowing this because I think I should? Because I don't want to seem unkind?
Your energy is not an unlimited resource. Protecting it isn't selfish.
If you've read this far and you're wondering whether you might be the one who talks at people, that awareness alone is a gift.
Pause now and then and ask yourself: Am I leaving space for them to speak, or filling every silence? Am I listening, or waiting for my turn? Does this feel like an exchange, or am I just unloading?
If the answer makes you uncomfortable, that's okay. It's not about being perfect. It's about being conscious.
If your body is telling you something feels off, even when the other person seems lovely, trust it. Your body isn't being dramatic. It's responding to something real.
You don't owe anyone access to your energy just because they're nice or struggling. Your sensitivity is not a flaw. It does ask you to be more intentional about where you place your energy.
You can be kind and boundaried at the same time. You can care deeply and still walk away when something feels wrong.
If the same draining dynamic keeps turning up in your life, that's a pattern, and patterns can be cleared. Read about clearing toxic relationship patterns.

You long for someone steady and keep falling for hot-and-cold. There's nothing wrong with you. Your nervous system is reaching for what's familiar.
