Picture a tree: a two-minute self-reflection exercise

From The Guide Newsletter

I saw someone post a painting of a tree and write about how deeply connected she felt to it. It wasn't just a landscape to her. It felt like identity. Like growth. Like something she'd lived through.

It made me wonder how often we're drawn to certain images, colours and forms that quietly mirror back who we believe we are.

So here's a small experiment.

Picture a tree

Before you read any further, pause and picture a tree. Don't analyse it. Don't try to design the "right" one. Just notice the first tree that comes to mind.

  • Is it tall and stretching upward, or short and compact?
  • Is it young and flexible, or ancient and weathered?
  • Do the branches reach wide and open, or feel tight and contained?
  • Is it full of leaves, or bare and stark?
  • Does it stand alone in an open field, or is it surrounded by forest?
  • Is it home to birds and life, or quiet and solitary?

Just sit with whatever image appeared.

Why trees?

Trees are powerful symbols. They stand for growth, resilience, stability and rootedness. They live through seasons. They shed what no longer serves. They survive storms and keep reaching for the light.

Because they're so universal, the way we imagine them often reflects the way we see ourselves.

My tree

When I did this, the tree that appeared felt expansive. Its branches reached far and wide. It wasn't tight or controlled. There was space around it. It felt like arms wide open.

As I sat with that, I realised it's how I experience myself at the moment. Someone who wants to reach. To connect. To extend outward.

That doesn't mean I always feel expansive. But it's how I see myself on the inside.

What your tree might be showing you

  • If it felt small or fragile, perhaps part of you feels exposed, or still in early growth.
  • If it was strong and ancient, maybe you feel steady and grounded in your wisdom.
  • If it stood alone, maybe independence matters to you. Or maybe you feel isolated.
  • If it was surrounded by others, perhaps you experience yourself as supported and connected.

There's no right or wrong tree. There is only awareness. And awareness changes things.

Take it a step further

  • Draw your tree.
  • Journal about it.
  • Ask whether it shows who you are now, or who you're becoming.
  • Imagine what would need to change for your tree to match the version of yourself you want to grow into.

We don't always need a complex framework to understand ourselves. Sometimes we just need a tree.

Why I stopped giving readings and now only heal

I used to give readings and guidance. I don't any more. Here's why healing took over, and why I think it serves you better.

Why do I keep attracting the same kind of person?

The same boss. The same partner. The same friend who drains you. It's a pattern, and it usually started long before they turned up.

How to know if it's a real yes (and stop saying yes to everything)

My dad's motto was "say yes to everything and worry about the details later". Here's how I learned to tell a true yes from a people-pleasing one.
