You've changed and they haven't: teaching people to meet you at your new level

From The Guide Newsletter

You've been doing the work. The healing, the clearing, the shifting. You're not the same person you were a year ago, six months ago, even last week.

But the people around you might still be relating to the old version of you. The one who put up with the moaning, the complaints, the same conversations on repeat.

Two options when you grow

You can put up walls and disconnect, choosing peace over presence.

Or you can teach people how to meet you at this new level. Show them what's possible now. Invite them into a different kind of conversation.

A middle path

I had a client recently who was struggling with exactly this. A family member kept complaining about how unfair life was, how nothing ever worked out. The same draining conversations over and over.

She'd done so much work on herself that she could see clearly how those thoughts were creating that exact reality. But she didn't want to lecture. She didn't want to come across as preachy. She also didn't want to keep nodding along.

So we found a middle path. She sent the family member a link to "The Strangest Secret" by Earl Nightingale, a classic recording about how we become what we think about. Just shared it casually. No big deal.

Now, when the "life isn't fair" road starts, she has something to point back to. "Hey, did you listen to that recording I sent? Remember what he said about what we think about?"

It's not preaching. It's not walls. It's a reference point. A bridge.

A bridge and a boundary

It's also a boundary. It gives her a way to say, without saying it directly, "I'm not going into that space with you any more."

She's not abandoning the relationship. She's not lecturing. She's signalling clearly that the old conversations don't work for her now, and there's a different way available if the other person wants to take it.

What teaching people to meet you looks like

You're not changing them. You're not forcing anything. You're showing them that you've moved, offering them a way to come with you, and quietly stepping out of the conversations that don't serve either of you.

The ones who are ready will follow. The ones who aren't will stay where they are, and that's okay too. At least you've stopped pretending you're still in the same place.

Walls might feel safer in the short term, but they cost you connection. Teaching takes more energy upfront, but it keeps the relationships that can stretch and grow. And it gives the other person a chance. Sometimes people surprise you when you give them new information and don't just shut them out.

If one relationship keeps pulling you back into the old you, there may be a pattern underneath it. See how healing sessions work.
