You are not your thoughts: how to stop being hijacked by your reactions

From The Guide Newsletter

The other day my son came home talking about metacognition. He'd seen something about it on TikTok, which made me smile. It was all about thinking about thinking. Observing your own brain. Being aware of how your thoughts form and how you respond to them.

Then he looked at me and said, "Mum, I think you're really good at that."

I laughed at first. I don't walk around thinking I'm some master of my own mind. But the more I sat with it, the more I realised he was right. I can step slightly outside myself and notice what's happening in my own head.

That hasn't come from studying psychology. It's come from spirituality.

The space between reaction and response

One of the biggest gifts of the path I've been on is that I've learned to observe myself in real time.

I can feel when I'm triggered. I can hear the tone in my own thoughts. I can sense when a story is starting to build momentum. And I can pause and think, "Ah, there's that pattern again."

That tiny bit of space between the reaction and the response is everything.

Your brain is running old scripts

The brain is part of our human wiring. It's shaped by family patterns, cultural conditioning and generations of inherited energy. It's brilliant, but it's not neutral. It carries scripts that were written long before we arrived, and when something happens, it reacts from that programming.

When I drop into my higher self, it feels different. There's less urgency. Less defensiveness. Less need to prove or protect. From that place I can watch the brain doing its thing without making it my identity.

A thought is just a thought

That, to me, is metacognition in spiritual form.

It's recognising that a thought is just a thought. A reaction is just a reaction. Inherited fear, anger, jealousy or insecurity might be moving through you, but it isn't the whole of you.

When you can observe it and not become it, you suddenly have choice. And choice changes everything.

What this looks like day to day

  • Sitting in a moment of tension without being completely hijacked by it.
  • Noticing the tightening in your body, and softening.
  • Catching yourself mid-story and deciding not to feed it.
  • Letting feelings rise and fall without building an identity around them.

It doesn't make you detached or robotic. If anything, it makes you more emotionally intelligent, because you're not fused with every wave that moves through you.

How you build it

This didn't arrive overnight for me. It came from practising presence. From learning to come back to the now. From building a relationship with the part of me that watches.

The more I strengthened that observer, the less chaotic my inner world became.

Metacognition might be trending on social media, but it's something much older. It's remembering that you are more than your thoughts, more than your inherited patterns, and more than your immediate reactions.

That awareness is a quiet kind of power.

If an old pattern keeps grabbing the wheel before you can pause, see how healing sessions work.

My dad's motto was "say yes to everything and worry about the details later". Here's how I learned to tell a true yes from a people-pleasing one.
