Don't put your dreams on hold. Your kids are watching

From The Guide Newsletter

Over the years I've worked with so many women who have tucked their dreams away for later.

And I get it. Life gets busy. Babies arrive. Elderly parents need support. Bills need paying. We give our time and energy to everyone else, and somehow our deepest dreams become the thing we'll get to "one day".

For mothers especially, this can feel like the right and noble thing to do.

  • "I want to give my kids everything I never had."
  • "There's just no space for me right now."
  • "It's selfish to want more when they need so much."

So the dream gets shelved. The art, the travel, the writing, the business, the thing you know deep down you're here to do. Until later. Until life quiets down. Until you're "allowed".

What are you modelling without realising it?

We teach our kids how to treat their dreams by how we treat ours.

I don't even know what my mum's dreams were. She worked hard, out of necessity, like many women did. She looked after us, ran a household and kept things going. But her passions, her joy, her big desires? They were never spoken about.

She gave a lot. But she never showed me what it looked like to choose something just for yourself. Not because she didn't want to. I don't think anyone ever showed her either.

You don't have to repeat the pattern

Whether you're a mother or not, this pattern runs deep. People put their lives on hold for their kids, their parents, their partners, the "right time". Generation after generation, dreams get passed over in favour of obligation.

Until one day, someone decides not to wait any more.

That's what I chose. My healing work and my art aren't hobbies or side projects. They're my career. They light me up and stretch me and call me forward constantly.

It didn't happen overnight. I've done a lot of belief clearing and deep inner healing to make space for those dreams to become real. I had to untangle the idea that I wasn't allowed to want more. That I couldn't care for my family and follow my calling. That dreams had to wait their turn.

Now my children get to witness what it looks like when someone follows the thing they were born to do.

It's never too late

If your children are grown, or the house is quieter now, the dream is still alive. There's no expiry date on your purpose.

Even now, you are modelling something. Your children, your grandchildren and the people around you are watching how you treat your own dreams.

Start small. But start.

You don't need to quit your job or overhaul your life today. Could you take one small step?

  • Sign up for the course.
  • Pick up the brush.
  • Write the first paragraph.
  • Book the trip.
  • Say yes to the dream you've put off for years.

Your dream doesn't need to be convenient. It just needs to be true.

You're not taking anything away from your family by following your dreams. You're giving them a living example of what's possible.

If a belief is telling you that you're not allowed, see how healing sessions work.
