How to know if it's the right path: follow the flow, not the force

From The Guide Newsletter

I hear it from so many people. "Everything feels hard right now." Plans are falling through. People are clashing. Things that once felt easy feel like wading through mud.

So how do you actually know if the thing you're trying to move towards is right for you?

Follow the flow, not the force

One of the biggest clues is how it feels.

When something is right for you, there's often a sense of flow. It might still be a big or scary decision. But once you've made it, things start falling into place.

You decide to leave a city or a relationship, and suddenly a house comes up that's exactly what you were hoping for. A friend offers you somewhere to stay without even knowing you needed it. A new work opportunity appears out of nowhere.

The right path tends to open doors. The wrong one tends to build walls.

When it's not lining up

If every step feels like a battle, with constant resistance, plans falling apart, glitches, delays and exhaustion, that's often the universe saying "not this way".

It doesn't always mean no. Sometimes it means not yet, or not like that.

So pause before you push harder. Look around. Ask yourself, "Is there another way this could unfold?"

The design job that taught me flow

I learned this years ago when I was running my graphic design business.

Clients would come in with urgent requests. "We need this tomorrow!" I'd feel the pressure to jump in straight away. But sometimes something in me would hesitate. I'd find myself not quite starting, thinking, "Why am I procrastinating? I should have this done by now."

Then, sure enough, a couple of days later they'd call. "Hey, I hope you haven't started that job yet. We've changed our minds!"

Every. Single. Time.

That's when I realised my hesitation wasn't laziness. It was alignment. My energy knew something my mind didn't.

Now, when something doesn't feel quite ready, I trust that. I hold the intention. I wait for the next step to reveal itself.

You can't miss what's meant for you

The best thing we can do when we're unsure is hold the vision of what we want and trust the timing.

That doesn't mean sitting on your backside doing nothing. It means tuning in, and taking action when it feels clear.

When the timing is right, it will be obvious. The doors open easily. The people show up. And you look back and think, "Ahh, that's why it didn't work before."

A little reminder

  • If it feels like you're constantly hitting walls, take a step back.
  • If it feels light, open or effortless, keep going.
  • Hold the intention.
  • Do the inner work.
  • Trust that timing is always working for you, not against you.

Journal prompts

  • Where in my life am I feeling the most resistance right now?
  • Where do things seem to fall into place easily?
  • What am I trying to control that might need space?
  • What would flow look like for me right now?
  • What belief or fear could I release to make more room for ease?

Sometimes the thing that's blocking us isn't the situation. It's what we believe about it.

Is it time to move on? When things keep getting harder

You've done the healing and the job, relationship or business is still getting harder. Is there more to heal, or is it time to go? How to tell.

The real stages of healing (it's not a straight line)

Healing is messy and layered, more cha-cha than straight line. A map of the nine stages, so you know where you are is okay.

You are not your thoughts: how to stop being hijacked by your reactions

My teenager came home talking about metacognition. It turns out the most practical gift of spiritual work is the space between reaction and response.
